3rd, 2008:
Parking in the County yard at the beach affords me an excellent
view of the Slough
and so I was able to capture a picture of this somewhat unusual
'raft' floating by
this evening. At first I dismissed it as just more debris washed
down by the recent rains but then I noticed something aboard moving.
Breaking out the binoculars I was able to determine that the
'raft' was, in fact,
a palm frond serving as the temporary abode of a least two young
nestlings. I was surprised that they remained aboard but then realized
they were too young to fly.
Concerned for their safety I followed the progress of the Ark
for 30 minutes until
it finally drifted onto the shoreline at a point where a group
of cormorants and
egrets had congregated. By then it was becoming too dark to
attempt a rescue so I
left hoping that they had finally reached a safe refuge.
From their long bills I assumed that they were a part of the
resident colony of Blue Herons ... wish I could have got a better closeup
to properly identify them.

Found and reported an attempted break-in last night at the new Angler
Center on the Pier. There was damage to both doors and to the right-hand
window but the burglars were defeated by the additional security measures
provided by United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC) - the County's
co-partner on the Pier. Hopefully the County will repair the
damage promptly to forestall further attempts on the weakened structure.
Also reported new graffiti that appeared overnight as well emanating
from one of the local gangs ... the good news is that the graffiti was
removed within two hours which
is the most timely response by the County so far. |
