February
18th, 2009:
Installers for Coastal Watch completed the final work for Goleta
Pier's own webcam today ... it is located on the eastside of the
Pier at the 2nd lightpost from the foot of the Pier.
I don't have much information as to the purpose of the webcam
although there is already speculation by a group of day drinkers in the
patio area at the foot of the Pier that the camera might be used to keep
an eye on them.
What I was told by Goleta Electric who did the initial wiring
is that the camera will be used in a United States Geological Survey of
beachfront erosion. I'm speculating that the camera might be in response
to the County's pending environmental impact report before the California
Coastal Commission requesting permission to install a permeable
groin to assist in controlling erosion.

21st, 2009:
After receiving multiple complaints from
anglers on the Pier I spoke with this commercial live rockfish fisherman
about mooring his commercial boat within 200' of the Pier and operating
his inflatable to lay his 'stick' rigs (PVC pipe attached to a float with
multiple hook drop lines) within 100' of the Pier.
He actually feigned surprise that the Pier
would be so posted saying the DFG had told him he could operate in any
reef.
Perhaps the County could post the applicable
regulations on the reef (west) side of the Pier as well ... currently the
regulations are only posted in the Hoist area on the east side.
Sec. 26-77. Pier--No mooring within two
hundred feet.
No person shall moor or anchor any commercial
vessel within two hundred feet of Goleta Beach Pier except in an emergency.
(Ord. No. 3708, § 1)
Sec. 26-79. Pier--No boat within one hundred
feet.
No person shall operate any boat within
one hundred feet of the Goleta Beach Pier except for the purpose of loading,
unloading, launching or removing such boat. (Ord. No. 3708, § 1)

24th, 2009:
In response to the numerous YouTube videos featuring jumping
from the Pier, and in particular the report of December
30th last year, the County has posted additional and much more strongly
worded signs both at the Angler Center and in the Hoist area.
